AT&T FamilyMap: track mobile phones

April 16th, 2009 | Filed under GPS, Mobile Phones 0 Comments

AT&T has announced the launch of a new service that lets subscribers in the same family plan to track the location of each member through mobile devices.

The service, called AT&T FamilyMap allows parents or other account holders to enter a website from a home or office or from their own Internet-enabled phone and request the current location of other group members that account.

View map showing the location of a user can be exchanged between a satellite image and street maps interactive. Users can also customize each computer that is tracked by assigning a name and a photo to each telephone number in the account, as well as tag places frequent, like home or school. The service has other options, such as the ability to receive regular updates on a particular phone’s location at set times throughout the day, either by text or e-mail.

To ensure the privacy rights of the user, all users of the account will receive a text message alert that can be tracked with regular updates to remind you of the fact.

All mobile subscribers to AT&T are compatible with the service and receive location information through GPS assisted. If the A-GPS system cannot be used to locate a phone, other methods will be used, probably through triangulation of cell towers.

The first 30 days are free, but then the location service for two phones is priced at almost $ 10 a month, while tracking up to five mobile phones costs 15 per month.
