AT&T TerreStar Genus, hybrid smartphone with cellular/satellite
AT&T US mobile operator and TerreStar provider of satellite communications, they announced a new hybrid smartphone that provides access to both TerreStar’s satellite network and AT&T’s network. It is called Genus. First detail of Genus cellular/satellite smartphone is appeared on the Internet in April of this year.
TerreStar Genus can be used on large areas of the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. As expected, the new TerreStar Genus Smartphone product supports both satellite and cellular network (GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA). The TerreStar Genus device is equipped with a 2.6-inch touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS.
TerreStar Genus operates under the Windows Mobile operating system, but WinMo version is not clear. Perhaps a full list of specifications will be announced during its demonstration at the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) exhibition, which will be held in Denver (Colorado, USA) from 3-7 October 2009.
The TerreStar Genus cellular/satellite smartphone will be available for corporate and government clients of AT&T in the Q1 2010. According to available data, its currently partners are preparing a similar communicator, designed for ordinary users. Data on the timing of its announcement is not yet.
