The use of radio procedures with Ultrawideband technology (UWB) is an alternative to cable-based multimedia transmission methods such as DVI, HDMI or firewire already been in discussion for many years. At CES 2007 Philips introduced a prototype of a system corresponding to the uncompressed HD signals up to 1080p (1920 × 1080, progressive) wireless to the appropriate receiving device sent.

The Gefen, American company is now offering the Wireless HDMI Extender (EXT-WHDMI) is actually a UWB solution for transferring HD-Audio/Video at least in the U.S. market. The specification can be over (with HDCP copy protected) video data with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels at a refresh rate of up to 30 frames per second (1080p30) transferred. Audio supports wireless HDMI extender 5.1-compressed audio (for example, according to the Dolby Digital or DTS system) and two PCM audio with up to 48 kHz sampling frequency. The transmitter unit has inputs for three sources (two HDMI ports and an analogue YUV component input), between which you can choose. The video images are used for the transmission according to the standard JPEG 2000 compressed.

According to developers, the system is compatible with the HDMI version 1.3. it’s supports remote control function specifically HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) and the feature “Auto Lip-Sync”, for the synchronicity between video and sound to ensure. The set has a return channel via which to send IR commands, so that the player with the convenient remote control of the location of the recipient can control.

A typical application scenario for the wireless HDMI solution Gefen leads the signal to below the ceiling-mounted projector or to a receiver in another room “on. The latter statement is, however, with caution. The transmission of data rates in the gigabit range in combination with a strong power limit (otherwise disturb other UWB transmitter radio) reduces the scope to a few meters. Gefen itself speaks for its product by 10 meters, with them, but between the transmitter and receiver are not allowed wall. Quite cheap, the wireless HDMI cannot pleasure: The list price of the set of transmitter and receiver is around 1000 U.S. dollars.
