General Electric develop microholographic technology for huge disc
General Electric (GE) reported that it achieved significant progress in the development of new; more advanced manufacturing technology of holographic disks. These discs will allow storing much more data than conventional DVD. They can be recorded as data storage which would require about 100 DVD. In doing so, the advantage of technology from General Electric that its application can establish a mass production of similar products and they will be sold at very affordable price. Interestingly, the first research on the development of holographic disks was still in the sixties of the last century, but until now their mass production is not established.
General Electric plans to use technology called microholographic that make the production cheaper. Research conducted since 2003, the aim was to find materials and technologies that will enable hologram small enough to reflect light to the recorded information could be read and recognized. Now researchers have come close to solving the problem. According to General Electric, the device reader holographic discs will be able to work with CD, DVD and Blu-ray. However, holographic drives will be much more space: they can store up to 500 GB of data. The company intends to demonstrate its development at a conference in Orlando, which will be held next month. However, that’s until the technology is imperfect. It was expected that the first disks based on it will be issued only in the 2011-2012.
