Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) has expanded its new fifth-generation family of hard drives, Hitachi Travelstar 7K500, performed in 2.5-inch form factor.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 hard drive has a speed of 7,200 rpm and can accommodate up to 500GB of capacitive. Buffer size is 16 MB, the average seek time is 12 ms. Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 HDD can withstand loads up to 400G for 2 ms in the operating mode and up to 1000G for 1 ms in a disabled state. This HDD claimed low power consumption 1.8 watts in read/write operations and 0.69 watts in standby mode.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 hard drive has implemented proprietary TrueTrack technology, which provides enhanced pick up head accuracy in terms of vibration and jolts. Optional drives can be equipped with the system hardware encryption information. It connects to PC through Serial ATA II (SATA II) interface.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 hard disks are positioned for use in gaming notebooks, laptop, workstations, portable, compact desktop computers, video surveillance systems and NAS.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 has dimensions 100x70x9.5 mm. Hitachi GST has already started to shipping the new HDD in limited quantities to top tier OEMs, volume shipments scheduled for the current month. Hitachi will offer an enhanced-availability (EA) version in 160GB to 500GB capacities in November 2009. The HDD capacity are 500GB, 320GB, 250GB, 160GB, and 120 GB.
