Intel Core i7, Core i5, and Intel P55 Express chipset, now officially
Intel, as expected, today announced new processors, Core i7 and Core i5 for desktop computers. We have already mentioned in the news about these chips, they belong to the family of Lynnfield, and use the architecture of Nehalem. New Core i7 and Core i5 are massive and quite affordable solutions. In addition to processors, was introduced a new chipset, Intel P55 Express, compatible with them.
Intel announced three chip; 2.93GHz Core i7 870, 2.8GHz Core i7 860 and 2.6GHz Core i5 750. All of them are quad-core, with 8 MB cache. The new processors support dual channel memory, while the more advanced and expensive series of Core i7 900 works with three-channel memory. It allowed making new Core i7 and i5 more compact and inexpensive. Cost of Intel Core i7 870, Core i7 860 and Core i5 750 is $562, $284 and $196 respectively.
Hyperthreading is an Intel technique that effectively doubles the number of processing threads (adding four virtual threads to the four physical CPU cores) depending on the workload. HyperThreading support is provided only at the new Core i7, at the i5 is not. Also, processors are compatible with Turbo Mode, which allows the acceleration. And, finally, the innovations are the availability of PCI Express directly on the chip, which allows graphics card or other components to interact directly with the processor, rather than through the north bridge controller or chipset. As Intel P55 Express, then the chipset supports 8 lines PCI Express, up to 14 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HD audio, 6 SATA ports with Matrix Storage technology. In addition, the chipset allows realizing Nvidia SLI technology and AMD CrossFireX using multiple video cards.
