Intel introduced new Intel Xeon Nehalem-EX Processor
As expected, Intel demonstrated the new features and benefits of Intel Xeon processor family, code-named Nehalem-EX. According to the company, the new chip will be the basis of intelligent expandable server platforms with high performance, which it will open new horizons in the computer industry.
Nehalem-EX Processor will provide up to 8 computational cores, supporting the processing of up to 16 streams simultaneously. The amount of cache memory is 24 MB. It will provide higher performance compared to previous generation processors. Start of mass production of Nehalem-EX is scheduled for the second half of 2009.
In the Nehalem-EX implemented new means of improving the reliability and ease of maintenance. The processor has inherited some of the features that have the Intel Itanium chips, for example, Machine Check Architecture (MCA) Recovery. Due to higher productivity, both processor families facilitates the transition from more expensive proprietary blade systems based on processors with a RISC architecture, at more cost.
Nehalem-EX is able to 9 times higher speed of memory compared to Intel Xeon 7400 previous generation. Now for one processor socket may account for up to 16 slots with RAM, twice as much as before. Nehalem-EX processors have four wide tires QuickPath, which provides good extensibility and allows building systems with multiple processor sockets, it can handle up to 128 processes, without using additional devices.
Features of Nehalem-EX
* Nehalem architecture is based on 45-nm process Intel metal gate technology using high-k;
* The new processors include up to 8 cores;
* With the Intel Hyper-threading can simultaneously handle up to 16 streams;
* Extensibility to 8 sockets through the Quick Path Interconnect (four-channel, high bandwidth);
* 24 MB of total cache;
* Memory controller, integrated on a chip;
* The technology of automatic overclocking Intel Turbo Boost;
* Expandable memory and buffer memory channels;
* The carrying capacity is 9 times higher compared with the decisions of the previous generation;
* Support for up to 16 memory slots for one socket;
* Advancement opportunities RAS, including the MCA Recovery;
* 2.3 billion transistors.
