Intel Xeon 5500, New Xeon Nehalem Processor Released

March 31st, 2009 | Filed under Computer, Technology 1 Comment

Intel Corporation formally introduced its new server-core Xeon processors, based on microarchitecture Nehalem. Remember, these chips were first announced as part of Apple Mac Pro computers a new generation, but have now become available to the general audience.

The features of new processors Xeon Nehalem support of HyperThreading technology and the Turbo Boost. These functions allow increasing the clock frequency, performing parallel computations, and disabling unused kernel that leads to a significant amount of growth in productivity of these chips.

A new series of Nehalem processors includes a line of chips, Xeon 5500 and Xeon 3500. Wholesale prices on new Xeon 5500 processors start at $ 188 for the version with dual cores and a clock speed of 1.86 GHz, at $ 1600 for quad core with a frequency of 3.2 GHz. Junior Xeon 3500 lineup at the moment consists of three chips. Their cost ranges from $ 284 up to $ 999 for the version with a clock speed of 2.66 GHz to 3.2 GHz model. These relatively low prices (compared to the higher line) due to the fact that the Xeon 3500 processors are compatible with fewer sockets than the Xeon 5500 chips.

Although Apple was the first to use the new Xeon Nehalem processors in powerful computers, its competitors Dell and HP have also begun to use these faster memory chips in its Dell Precision workstations, and HP Z800.
