NEC introduced first USB 3.0 add-on cards
Following the announcement of its NEC µPD720200 hardware controller to support the new USB 3.0 standard, NEC has submitted a number of expansion cards, established on the basis of this device. This approach is normal practice for any company to seek to promote a new standard in the market segment, where manufacturers of motherboards and chipsets are not yet pose stiff competition.
PCI-Express x1 add-on cards from NEC for desktop computers made in the standard design and provides users with two ports USB 3.0, which, of course, it can also be used to connect devices with interface USB 2.0. In addition, NEC introduced the ExpressCard-34 add-on card, intended for installation in notebook computers. It is equipped with the same two ports USB 3.0.
In the future, NEC plans to offer manufacturers of add-on cards to create their own design, based on the µPD720200 controller. These cards will have cost a relatively inexpensive is about $15 – $20, that will contribute to the popularity of the new standard of ordinary users.
Recall that the USB 3.0 standard in theory, it can offer data transfer rate equal to 4.8 Gbps, which it is about ten times faster than the predecessor USB 2.0.
