September 22nd, 2009 | Filed under Accessories, Technology 0 Comments

Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) has announced the creation of a new mini-SATA (mSATA) standard specification. Such a connector interface supports SATA, but has a more compact size and is designed primarily for small devices, including notebooks and netbooks. mini-SATA drives can be connected as hard drives (HDD) and solid state drive (SSD). Speed of data transmission through mSATA will be reach 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps. The new specification is supported by member companies of the working group of SATA-IO Cable and Connector Working Group, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, SanDisk, STEC, and Toshiba.

Toshiba, for example, has already announced a series of solid state drives with the mini-SATA connector (also represented by the thin storage with conventional SATA port). They use the latest 32nm flash memory from Toshiba MLC NAND and presented in versions for 30GB and 62GB. Speed sequential read these drives is 180 MB/s and sequential write is 70 MB/s. Mass production of Toshiba’s SSD with a mini-SATA connector will begin in October.
