Qualcomm has announced a new wireless local-area networking (WLAN) chip with support for 802.11n standard, intended for use in portable electronic devices, such as cellular phones and MIDs. The chip is called WCN1312 and has a very compact size 7 x 7 mm. Despite its compactness, the device provides a data exchange rate up to 72 Mbps.
Qualcomm WCN1312 Chip built on 65nm CMOS technology and consists of a 2.4GHz 802.11n baseband processor, the controller access to the media, radio frequency (RF) transceiver, and other parts. This chip supports both its own platform called Qualcomm BREW, and third-party operating system, Google Android and Windows Mobile.
According to Qualcomm, a WCN1312 chip is the first mobile device that supports antenna configuration 1×1 and 1×2 dual-receive antenna configuration, which it will increase the speed of data transmission (range and data throughput). The first samples of the new chip will be released before the end of June, while it mass production is scheduled to begin in autumn.
