Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) of Germany presented at SID Display Week 2009 a new mini-projector based on OLED-panel. This projector is used to reflective images using static optical system. This is in contrast to other similar devices on the market, which is usually applied reflective of, for example, DLP or LCOS. According to German scientists, in this case there is no need to use expensive reflective technology, since the OLED-panel is itself a source of light.

A prototype mini-projector, presented at the exhibition, is equipped with five lenses and emitting in the green spectrum of OLED-panel dimension of 8 x 6 mm and a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels (VGA). Mini projector based OLED-panel has a diameter of up to 17 mm, its length is 24 mm, and the occupied volume of about 10 cm3. It is able to project an image equivalent to the size of the screen with a 6-inch diagonal, at a distance of 30 to 50 cm, however, use as a light-emitting element OLED-panel has its drawbacks, which the developers intend to fight. For example, until the resulting image can help of very low brightness.
