Samsung develops mini-card SSDs, smallest and SATA II interface
Samsung Corporation has announced the smallest SSD available on the market. These drives are a mini-PCIe card with an SATA II 3.0 Gbps, and their maximum capacity will reach 64 GB. This SATA II drives is 80% smallest than the 2.5-inch drives standard for notebooks, as well as disk size is less than 1.8-inch. Thanks to its compact dimensions, new mini-card SSD from Samsung is ideal for mobile devices, for example, Internet tablets, and small ultrathin netbook. In addition, they can be used as an additional drive in standard laptops.
Mini-PCIe card from Samsung has using 40 nm chip memory controller and modern, making their maximum speed of read and write data of 200 MB/s and 100 MB/s, respectively. These figures are virtually the same level as the full SSD. The new SSD cards will be produced in versions with a capacity of 16, 32 and 64 GB, and power of these devices is only 0.3 watts.
The timing of the start mini-PCIe SSD mass production by Samsung is not known. However, the South Korean company has already given its partners the first prototypes of their devices, and expects to complete the standardization process by the beginning of the third quarter of 2009.
