TDK predicts 640GB 2.5-inch, 2.5TB 3.5-inch HDDs
According to the forecasts of the Japanese company, TDK Corporation, capacity hard drives continue to grow rapidly. Already in January 2010 will see the maximum capacity of 2.5-inch hard drive to reach 640GB, while the figure 3.5-inch HDD size will be 2.5TB.
TDK Corporation is a manufacturer of read/write heads for some hard drives manufacturers, and their predictions based on data roadmap these companies. By December 2009, is scheduled to move from the production of heads for 250 GB of plates for the production of similar devices for the plates with a capacity of 320GB. And since the average 2.5-inch drive includes two plates, of course, its total capacity will be 640GB. In addition, next year the speed of 2.5-inch HDD size will overcome the barrier of 5400 rpm and, ultimately, to reach 7200 rpm.
Regarding the 3.5-inch hard drive used in desktop computers, TDK currently mass-produces heads with a capacity of 500 GB. However, the Japanese company plans to begin mass production of read/write heads for the more powerful 640 GB plates in November, and their serial production should be running by the end of January 2010. Thus, the capacity of a 3.5-inch HDD with 4-platter at the beginning of next year could reach 2.5TB, and possibly more if they created more capacious plate and head to them.
