According to the Japan’s own Yomiuri, Toshiba intends this year to produce the world market for its first Blu-ray player, as well as Blu-ray recorder for the Japanese market. This is likely to mean a final move in the Toshiba camp of supporters of the format.
Recall earlier Toshiba, together with two other Japanese companies; NEC and Sanyo developed and heavily promoted its own format for recording high-definition video on HD DVD. Because the existence of two competing technologies a few years ago, later, another format war, a victory which won just Blu-ray technology.
One of the key arguments in this confrontation has been the choice in favor of the Blu-ray format, major Hollywood film studios, which require a single technology for recording their movies. As a result, approximately one and a half years ago, Toshiba announced to discontinue HD DVD support and the phasing out development of their players using this technology.
Unfortunately, there are no technical details about the Blu-ray player from Toshiba. Surely only that the emergence of another strong player should lead to further price reductions in the Blu-ray players and improve their quality and functionality.
