Windows 7 Starter Edition for netbook

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed the introduction of hardware limitations on the use of the initial version of Windows 7 called Windows 7 Starter Edition. This software is designed exclusively for computer systems with small screens and low power processors. Currently, under this definition is suitable for most so-called netbook.

In addition, Ballmer noted that although the Windows 7 Starter Edition will be available on a planetary scale, the ordinary consumers and representatives of business community to buy it directly will not be. The fact that the initial functional version of Windows 7 will be offered exclusively OEM manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba.

Last May, the Malaysian Web site TechARP.com published a list of configurations netbook restrictions imposed by Windows 7 Starter Edition. According to these data, the starting version of Windows 7 may be mounted on netbook with a diagonal screen of not more than 10.2 inches, whose amount of memory does not exceed the 1 GB storage capacity and built-in HDD or SSD does not extend beyond the 250GB and 64GB respectively. In addition, computers with Windows 7 Starter Edition can only be unknown processor whose clock frequency is less than 2 GHz.

Microsoft does not disclose how much it would cost of Windows 7 Starter Edition to OEM manufacturers. At the same time, Ballmer admitted solutions to lower the price of the Windows XP Home, for which a license from April 2008 is sold exclusively netbook producers. In addition, the U.S. Corporation has confirmed the intention to sell Windows XP Home for at least 12 months after the release of Windows 7, scheduled for October 22.
