World’s first USB 3.0 controller from NEC
NEC Electronics announced the development of the world’s first hardware controller with support for the new USB 3.0 standard. The controller called µPD720200, it allow computers and other electronic devices to connect to peripheral devices supporting the new standard for the connection. Theoretically, the USB 3.0 standard can delivers data transfer rates of 5 Gbps, which it is about 10 times faster than modern USB 2.0.
Of course, the NEC µPD720200 controller retains full backward compatibility with USB 2.0 or even 1.1, although the ports are USB 3.0 and they do not support the device with the USB controller legacy 1.x. According to statements made by NEC, its new controller can be used in the external hard drive and SSD, many of which it can transmit data at a speed exceeding the limits of the USB 2.0 standard, but it has limited functionality of the standard. In addition, it will significantly enhance the ability of computers, televisions and recording devices drives. For example, the transfer of 25 GB of video using new µPD720200 controller from NEC Electronics is spending only 70 seconds.
The first samples test of µPD720200 controller will be available in June for a preliminary price of $ 15. It was expected that the production rate of these devices will reach one million parts per month in September this year.
